Dear Bill:
At a recent meeting, the Township Board of Trustees authorized
_me to negotiate a contract for one additional deputy for a
total of six deputies, I would be interested in having you
begin the procedure to implement this decision. However, it
appears to me that the per-deputy costs of contractual
services are inflated. They presently include the cost of
relieving officers during their court appearances, sick days,
vacations and holidays. In view of the recent layoffs, it
now appears that the Sheriff's Department does not have
sufficient manpower to provide that relief and that there
will be times when we have no deputies on duty in the Township.
In addition, the cOsts of deputy services increased significantly
on April 1, 1983. This occurred at a time when gasoline costs,
some insurance and other costs were decreasing. I request that
you have your Department of "Management and Budget review the
actual costs of Sheriff's Department contractual patrol with an
eye toward reducing them to a more realistic level..
Will you please review this request and advise me of the procedure
.that you desire to follow in this matter.
Sincerely,
Ronald Selke
