In re: Commemoration of Mexican-American Week in the County of
TO THE OAKL,L,ND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Mr. Che7,-F-f ,',on, Ladies and Gentlemen;
WHEREAS, there is a r all the people of Oakland County to recognize and
appreciate the valuable and caos:der ,:4 contributions made by all the diverse ethnic groups
to the vitality of this County; and
WHEREAS, Mexican-Americans are one of the largest ethnic groups in Oakland
County with over 18,000 people of Latin An origin living in Oakland County. Indeed
one of Michigan's earliest tTHaimAmerican seWemer ,t- was in the Pontiac and Rochester
areas of Oakland County during 1915; and
WHEREAS, Mo,:ican-Americans constitute a minority group with strong linguistic,

regarding the great contributions that Mexican-American have made economically,
agriculturally, industrially, and educationally to this County; and
WHEREAS, through great pride in the unique richness of their heritage which serves as a
unifying force to all, Mexican-American heritage has proven a benefit to all Oakland County
residers by enhancing the diversity of cultural and social opportunities v, ...,ur great County;
and
WHEREAS, there exists the continuous need to examine the status of Mexican-American
basic human rights to eliminate any traces of discrimination am:l e;s1..::;,:.:itation that may yet exist.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Oakland County Board of Commissionerf•.,
the week of September 10- 16, 1978, be hereby comme . Mexicr n- - 'can week in
the County of Oakland in celebration of the 168th Anni\ f Mexican Independence,
afford all Oakland County residents the opportunity to lear aboutcnd seek understanding of the
numerous contributions the Mexican-Americans have made to this County.
MR. CHAIRPERSON, I move the adoption of tL ing resolution.

Moved by Price supported by Pernick the rules be suspended for immediate
consideration of the resolution.
A sufficient majority having voted therefor, the motion carried.
Moved by Price supported by Pernick the resolution be adopted_
The resolution was unanimously adopted.
