HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 1978.05.04 - 12856May 4, 1978 Miscellaneous Resolution 8457 Marguerite Simson, County Commissioner - District #7 IN RE: OPPOSITION TO FEDERAL GUIDELINES PROPOSING LIFTS ON ALL DIRECT - TRANS BUSES FOR HANDICAPPED TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS, new Federal Guidelines, part of the Urban Mass Transportation Act, 1 973 through 1976, proposes to mandate that every direct trans bus must have a lift for handicapped commencing in 1979; and WHEREAS, the enormous cost involved to implement such requirement and the lack of method of getting the handicapped from their homes to a direct bus line renders said proposal impractical and prohibitive; and WHEREAS, the Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority (SEMTA), advised that they want to meet the needs of the elderly and handicapped, however, total accessibility, which is what certain handicapped groups are pushing for, is impractical; and WHEREAS, further revision of the Federal Guidelines mandating lifts to be installed on direct Trans-Buses should be made to provide some means of getting the handicapped to the bus line. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners opposes the Federal Guidelines requiring that all Trans-Buses be provided with lifts for the handicapped in accordance with that part of the Urban Mass Transportation Act, 1973 through 1976, Section 16 - Sub-Section 16-C, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that certified copies of the foregoing resolution be forwarded to the Oakland County Congressional delegation, National Association of Counties and the Urban Mass Transportation Authority in Washington D.C.
