RES. #7139 - OPPOSITION TO BUSING FOR INTEGRATION PURPOSES TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Mr. Chairman, Ladle and Gentlemen: The General Government Committee reports Miscellaneous Resolution #7139 with the recommendation that said resolution be adopted. The Genera! Government Committee, by Henry W. Hoot, Chairman moves the acceptance of the foregoing report . GENERAL GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE Betty J. Fortino ft-71: APPROVE THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION f c/bs_ Date May 22, 1975 RESOLUTION NO. RE: OPPOSITION TO BUSSING FOR INTEGRATION PURPOSES BY: BETTY J. FORTINO TO: THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MR. CHAIRMAN, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: WHEREAS, the present concept of bussing school children to achieve integration is unconscionable; and WHEREAS, said school bussing requires the expenditure of great amounts of money; and WHEREAS, despite the avowed purposes and the expenditure of monies, integration has not been accomplished nor has the quality of education been increased; and WHEREAS, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners should support and urge amendments to both the State and Federal Consti- tutions to prohibit school bussing for the purpose of achieving integration. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners urges appropriate action be taken by the State Legislature and the Congress of the United States to procure a constitutional amendment to both the State and Federal Constitution to prohibit school bussing for the sole purpose of achieving integration. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to all Congressmen from the State of Michigan and to all State Senators and State Representatives. MR. CHAIRMAN, I move the adoption of the foregoing resolution. 7139 #7139 Moved by Hoot supported by Roth the report be accepted. A sufficient majority having voted therefor, the motion carried. Moved by Hoot supported by Fortino that resolution #7139 be adopted. Discussion followed. AYES: Daly, Dearborn, Douglas, Dunleavy, Fortino, Gabler, Hoot, Houghten, Kasper, Lennon, Moffitt, Montante, Nowak, Olson, Patterson, Pernick, Roth, Wilcox, Wilson, Aaron, Button, Coy. Allen Clerk By Deputy Clerk The Chairman announced pursuant to Rule XI-E the matter shall be laid over to the next regular Board meeting. #7139 Moved by Fortino supported by Dunleavy the resolution be adopted. The Chairman referred the resolution to the General Government Committee. Mr. Price objected to the referral. Discussion followed. The Chairman stated those in favor of sustaining the objection vote "yes" and those opposed vote "no". AYES: Gabler, McDonald, Price. (3) NAYS: Button, Dearborn, Dunleavy, Fortino, Hoot, Houghten, Kasper, Lennon, Moffitt, Montante, Nowak, Olson, Patterson, Pernick, Roth, Simmons, Wilson. (17) A sufficient majority not having voted therefor, the objection was not sustained. The resolution was referred to the General Government Committee.
