O'BRIEN TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MR. CHAIRMAN, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: The untimely passing of Burton I. Gordin has deeply shocked the State of Michigan. Mr. Gordin served as Executive Director of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, having been appointed on April 1, 1964. He was born on October 15, 1919, received his education at Temple University and Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, and was a former newspaper reporter for the Philadelphia Record. Burton I, Gordin came to Michigan from his position as Executive Director of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations. He served that agency as Senior Field Repre- sentative, Supervisor and Deputy Director from its inception in 1952. From 1949 to 1952 he was employed by the Philadelphia Fair Employment Practices Commission as Field Represen- tative and Research Associate. Mr. Gordin was a veteran of World War Ii, having held the rank of Captain in the Army Signal Corps. Surviving are his wife, Paula, and one child residing at 1551 Chateaufort Place in Detroit, Michigan. Burton I.Gordin was dedicated to the task of providing for minority group persons, in a way that would uplift their hopes and their faith in the American way of life and he will be keenly missed by all who were privileged to know him.
