MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION #5L14
BY: LAWRENCE R. PERNICK AND JAMES MATHEWS
IN RE SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS AND SUPPLEMENTARY
BENEFIT REDUCTIONS
TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Mr. Chairman, Ladies & Gentlemen
WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States of America in its wisdom
recognized the increased cost of living existing in the country as well as the reduced
purchasing power of the dollar and accordingly increased social security benefits
to Senior Citizens and Retirees, to compensate for this situation and,
WHEREAS, the State of Michigan Department of Social Services has
reduced Supplementary benefits; and/or Medicaid premiums have been increased,
and food stamps have been denied those whose Social Security has been increased,
and therefore the increases in Social Security benefits are negated by these actions,
and
WHEREAS, the actions of the Department of Social Services appear to be
basically unfair and do not provide equal protection of the law for those whose
supplementary benefits may be reduced, and
WHEREAS, many citizens of Oakland County are directly adversely
affected by this action of the Department of Social Services,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Oakland County Board of
Commissioners calls upon the Department of Social Services to review and reconsider
their actions to the end of restoring the intent of the Congress of the United States
to recognize the need for increased benefit levels to senior citizens and retirees
on social security.
Mr. Chairman, I move the adoption of the foregoing resolution and ask
