HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 1970.06.18 - 16486June 18, 1970 RESOLUTION NO. 54/9 RE: TRIBUTE TO VIET NAM VETERANS BY: LOCAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE TO THE OAKAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MR, CHAIRMAN, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: WHEREAS, many vouna men from Oakland County have died in combat in the Viet Nam War; and WHEREAS, this Board of Commissioners extends its deepest sympathy to the families of those men who have been taken from us; and WHEREAS, in the future, to extend our sympathy to the families of those men and women killed in combat in the Viet Nam War, all flags on the Oakland County Service Center will be flown at half- staff, NOW THEREFORE BE FT RESOLVED that in the future on the day of the funeral of a Viet Nam War veteran of Oakland County, all flans on the Oakland County Service Center be Clown at half-staff as a tribute to the deceased veteran and an expression of sympathy to the family of such veteran. Patnales: if no objection, it will be so referred. Moved by Powell •supp. O'Donoghue that the rules be suspended and that the unanimous vote of the Bd. be cast for this res. Patnales: This is a roll call on suspension of the rules. Ayes: 21 Nays: 1 (start with Hamlin) Motion carried. Patnaies: Is there a support to the original motion? Mr. Aaron. /I would like to make an amendment to that Grba: It should also include any distinguished citizen of Oak.Co. do Patnales: We would hate to have certain guidelines. We e-to have rules on the flag now....there should be some guidelines Richards: I would like to amend that along with Vietnam veterans that provision also be made for any Oak.Co, boys who may lose their lives in Cambodia PatnaIes: Why don't we amend it to military service outside the U.S. Is there a support: Mr. Walker, Coy: This is a beautiful emotional issue, but telephone calls.... should be sent back to comm. and find out how many phone calls come in when it is at half mast. I move that it be referred to the Human Resources Comm. - support Pernick Patnales: Motion to refer takes priority Powell: Public should be informed that someone in this Co. lost their life Olson: Fly county flag at half staff until that lousy war is over Patnales: Motion before us ts to refer to H.R. AYES: 10 NAYS: 14 (start with Horton) LOST Patnales: We will vote on the amendment of Mr. Richards that the flag be lowered to half mast for the death of any young Americans in the American forces killed outside the continental limits of the U.S. - all servicemen serving outside the U.S. Powell: I would ask Mr. Richards if he would expand his amendment also to include in the amendment "that are brought to the attention of the administration of 0.C." rather than putting the burden on finding out would you accept that? Patnales: no objection - should include both men and women Kasper: The word "combat" should be in there rather than just military service Moved by Wilcox supported by Aaron the resolution be referred to the Human Resources Committee. Moved by Powell supported by O'Donoghue the rules be suspended for immediate consideration of the resolution. AYES: Hamlin, Horton, Houghten, Kasper, Mainland, Mastin, O'Brien, O'Donoghue, Olson, Patnales, Pernick, Powell, Richards, Richardson, Szabo, Walker, Wilcox, Aaron, Brennan, Coy, Grba. (21) NAYS: Gabler. (1) A sufficient majority having voted therefor, the motion carried. Moved by Grba that the resolution also include any distinguished citizen of Oakland County. (No support to the motion.) Moved by Richards the resolution be amended to include Oakland County Servicemen who may lose their lives in Cambodia. (No support to the motion.) Moved by Richards supported by Walker the resolution be amended that thp flag be lowered to half mast for the death of all Oakland County Servicemen serving outside the United States, that—ore b-rought—ta—the ; attent-ion -ofAthe administration of Oakland County. -,'. (10) NAYS: Horton, Kasper, Mastin, O'Brien, O'Donoghue, Olson, Powell, Richards, Richardson, Szabo, Walker, Wilcox, Aaron, Brennan. (14) A sufficient majority not having voted therefor, the motion lost. Vote on amendment: A sufficient majority having voted therefor, the motion carried.
