Gosling County Commissioner-District #14 RE: OPPOSE INCREASE IN FEDERAL FUEL TAX TO BALANCE THE BUDGET TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Mr. Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS federal gas taxes which supply the Highway Trust Fund with monies to provide federal aid for our road system have been sequestered to bring the federal budget into balance; and WHEREAS this $9 billion sequestration of highway money together with new proposals of raising the 9 federal gasoline tax by an additional 10-30 per gallon would not only cause a major erosion of our present highway system, but would have long-term negative impact on our National economy; and WHEREAS, such a deficit-reduction tax on a necessity commodity like gasoline is a regressive tax, which not only erodes public support for the successful pay-as-you-go federal/state highway program, but prohibits state and local road construction and maintenance tax initiatives; and WHEREAS independent studies of these major gas tax proposals indicate that the negative economic impact in terms of increased unemployment, lowered automobile production, lower construction starts and a major decline in the Gross National Product would allow the federal government to realize only 27 for every tax dollar. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners does hereby vehemently oppose any and all proposals to increase federal gas taxes for budget deficit reduction purposes as a regressive, inflationary and economically unsound tax detrimental to the welfare of the entire Nation. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this resolution be sent to Oakland County's Congressional Delegation. Mr. Chairperson, I move the adoption of the foregoing resolution. lynx.
