Skarritt, Chairperson RE: (SUPPORT) HOUSE BILL 5057 WHICH WOULD CREATE AN ACT TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE ENRICHMENT STANDARDS FOR FLOUR AND CERTAIN OTHER FOOD PRODUCTS TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Mr. Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS, Michigan food products should be as nutritious and desirable as products from other States; and WHEREAS, enrichment of flour and bread products was initiated by federal law during World War II when many young men failed physicals for military service due to poor nutritional status and deficiency diseases; and WHEREAS, this federal law was later rescinded along with several other World War II-related laws; and WHEREAS, since then 34 states have enacted laws requiring that white flour used for bread and rolls must be enriched with nutrients; and WHEREAS, 16 states, including Michigan, have no such laws so the white flour permitted in these states is as nutrient deficient as the white flour used in the early years of this century when deficiency diseases were common; and WHEREAS, House Bill 5057 would require adequate enrichment standards for flour, bread, rolls, buns, bagels, pita bread, macaroni and noodle products at a negligible cost, (e.g. $.0006 per loaf of bread). NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners supports House Bill 5057. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to all legislators from Oakland County and to the county's legislative agent. Kuhn,' Chairperson RE: (SUPPORT) House Bill 5057 Which Would Create an Act to Provide Adequate Enrichment Standards for Flour and Certain Food Products TO THE GENERAL GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE Mr. Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Health 8, Human Services Committee, having reviewed the above referenced House Bill 1 reports with the recommendation that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners support said bill. Mr. Chairperson, on behalf of the Health & Human Services Committee, I submit the foregoing report.
