Miscellaneous Resolution #91045 February 28, 1991
BY: Ruel E. McPherson, County Commissioner, District #9
RE: County Funding to Educate the Public on the Environmental Impact of the
Solid Waste Plan
TO: THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Mr. Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS, $159,900 of taxpayer money has been designated for a
public relations campaign to elicit support for Oakland County's proposed 641
solid waste plan which includes incineration; and
WHEREAS, this money represents the largest expenditure in Oakland
County's history, which the taxpaying citizens have not been allowed to vote
on; and
WHEREAS, a large number of Oakland County residents are very
concerned about the potential environmental impacts regarding the proposed
solid waste plan and demand that a portion of the $159,900 be used to support
environmental groups to educate the community on the environmental health
hazards associated with incineration and to disseminate information of other,
less harmful alternatives.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of
Commissioners agrees that a portion of the $159,900 earmarked for the public
relations firm of Stone, August and Baker to promote the county's solid waste
plan be made available to interested environmental groups for the purposes of
presenting the alternative viewpoint to incineration and other alternative
approaches to waste management than what is represented in the proposed 641
solid waste plan.
Mr. Chairperson, I move the adoption of the foregoing resolution.
