governor of Michigan, (1640-41), and was born in Norwich,
Connecticut. He was the son of Dudley and Lucy (Backus)
Woodbridge, who moved the family to Marietta, Ohio in
1191. William returned to Conne cticut to study law at lit-
chfichl from 1731 to 1800, and was admitted to the Ohio bar
in 1800. He began public life as a merneber of the Ohio
legislature (1807), and the next year he was appointed Pro-
secuting Attorney for Washington County, Ohio. In 1814,
President Madison appointed Woodbridge secretary of the
Michigan Territory, and he moved to Detroit. During his
time in that office, WcxxIbridge served as a territorial
delegate to Congress (2323-32). He also gave legal advice in
cases with the Northwest Fur Company and Canadian cases
against the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1835, he was a
cleluate trs the nchienn. Constitutional cuoycntIon anc.1 tie
served as a slate senator from 1837-39. The next year, Wood-
bridge took office as governor after winning the election as
a conservative Whig candidate. To combat the financial
crises of the state at. that time, Woodbridge urged tax revi-
sion, stricter bunking regulatiuns and more funding from
the federal government for internal improvements. He was
instrumental in establishing the University of Michigan into
nine branches. He was elected to the 135. Senate in 1841,
and so withdrew early from office as governor. Woodbridge
served in Washington for six years, and then retired in
Detroit, where he died.
