IN RE: RECOMMENDATION FOR POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF
EQUALIZATION DEPARTMENT
TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS Mr. Edwin C. Sage, Jr., has announced his retirement as Director
of Equalization effective January 1, 1966; and
WHEREAS this Department, being unique in its operational system, requires a
Director who is not only knowledgeable in equalization matters generally, but who is
also familiar with the methods as developed in Oakland County; and
WHEREAS, it would require many months of training to sufficiently familiarize
another person in the Oakland County method; and
WHEREAS, your Committee unanimously agrees that Mr. Stephens, our Deputy
Director, has faithfully and in an impartial manner always fulfilled his duties and
obligations to Oakland County in a creditable manner; and
WHEREAS your Committee has, for a number of months, been cognizant of Mr.
Sage's intent to retire and has considered other persons suggested for this position, and
has found none as fully qualified as Mr. Stephens;
THEREFORE, the Equalization Committee recommends the appointment of Herman
W. Stephens for the position of Director of the Equalization Department, commencing
January 1, 1966, and I so move.
Nominations in order for Director of the Equalization Department,
Mr. Fouts nominated Herman W. Stephens. Mr, Oldenburg, Mr. Meichert
and Mr. Linley seconded the nomination.
Mr. Hagstrom addressed the Board relative to the method of appointment
of the Equalization Director.
Moved by Hagstrom supported by Remer the resolution be referred back
to the Committee with instructions that they advertise through the
Personnel Department, examine and interview all applicants for the
position of Director of the Equalization Department.
A sufficient majority not having voted therefor, the motion lost.
Moved by Edward supported by 0 7 Donogbue that nominations be closed.
A sufficient majority having voted therefor, the motion carried. _
