BY: Mr. Mercer
IN RE: REPORT ON STATUS OF REMODELING OF OAKLAND COUNTY SANATORIUM
TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen:
Pursuant to the By-Laws of this Board, your County Institutions Committee, on
March 14, 1966, made a visual inspection of the remodeling work at the Oakland County
Sanatorium and herewith wishes to report on the status of the remodeling program.
The Oakland County Sanatorium has, within the last two years, undergone some
extensive remodeling changes per Fire Marshall's request and also per Michigan Department
of Health requirements for the housing of tuberculosis and non-tuberculosis patients. The
institution provides 88 beds for sub-acute (chronic) patients and 78 beds for tuberculosis
patients. To date, in order to make the building meet Michigan Department of Health
and Fire Marshall's requirements, the County has under Project M-181 spent $317,266.09.
Under Project M-259, exclusively earmarked for bathroom renovations, the County has
expended $23,895.80.
The building interior has taken on a new look. Certain hallways in the non-
tuberculosis section have been eliminated and the space has been converted to four and
six bed wards. In the tuberculosis section, patient bathroom facilities have been enlarged
and modernized. Throughout the entire facility, a call system has been installed and all
wails and ceilings have been newly painted. The rejuvenation has produced a marked
improvement in the entire interior to the satisfaction of the Fire Marshall and contributes
to the morale of personnel and patients. It should also be noted that the bulk of the
remodeling work was performed by the Oakland County Maintenance Department and your
Committee wishes to acknowledge commendation.
Additionally, County Project M-269 calls for the construction of a loading dock,
which will include an ambulance entrance, and alcohol and oxygen storage. Plans also
call for remodeling the staff dining room and remodeling the public bathrooms, as well as
providing a bathroom for staff.

Other work that should be planned for the future should include:
I. Renovation of remaining bathrooms.
2. Modernization of kitchen walk-in boxes and provision for freezer units.
3. Improvements to parking facilities.
4. Construction of new elevator, properly placed, to effect better operation
and maneuverability of food carts, patients and supplies.
5. New electrical service to building and within building.
6. Updating of lighting fixtures to fluorescent.
The County has done much to renovate this building and, as money becomes
available, should continue to complete the above recommendations for better efficiency
of operation.
MR. CHAIRMAN, on behalf of the County Institutions Committee, I move the
acceptance of the foregoing report.
COUNTY INSTITUTIONS COMMITTEE
