RESOLUTION April 18, 1960

IN RE: OFF-SHORE OIL WELL DRILLING
TO: THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS, the Supervisors Inter-County Committee, on recommendation of its
Water, Sewage and Drainage Committee, has recommended that this Board of Supervisors
consider the necessity to take steps to prevent oil well drilling in the International Waters
of the Great Lakes, and
WHEREAS, in the Fall of 1959 there was indication that off-shore oil well drilling
was to be permitted near Sarnia, Ontario, in the lower Lake Huron area which discharges
into the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River and Lake Erie, all of which are
used by cities in Michigan and Ontario as a source of public and industrial water supplies, and
WHEREAS, this area is used both intensively and extensively for recreation, and
WHEREAS, there is considerable evidence to indicate that such operations result
in extensive pollution which adversely affect water supplies, recreational uses and property
values.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the International Joint Commission be
importuned to take necessary steps to prevent oil well drilling in the International Waters of
the Great Lakes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk forward certified copies of this
resolution to the International Joint Commission and to the Supervisors Inter-County Committee.
MR. CHAIRMAN, on behalf of the Inter-County Committee, I move the adoption
of the foregoing resolution.
