MC CULLOCH, CHAIRPERSON RE: MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION #92190, LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL - USE OF RADAR EQUIPMENT TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Mr. Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Public Services Committee, having reviewed the above referenced resolution, reports with the recommendation that the resolution be adopted. SERVICES COMMITTEE Miscellaneous Resolution # 92190 August 20, 1992 BY: Rudy Serra, County Commissioner - District #18 RE: LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL - USE OF RADAR EQUIPMENT TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Mr. Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS the National Fraternal Order of Police has raised concerns about cancer in police officers being caused by microwave exposure from radar equipment, including a rare form of eye cancer; and WHEREAS law enforcement officers face life threatening risks to protect the public daily; and WHEREAS occupational exposure to microwave radiation represents an avoidable and unnecessary danger to our law enforcement personnel. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners joins the Fraternal Order of Police in calling upon the Centers for Disease Control to conduct the necessary research to determine the safety of police radar equipment and encourages all law enforcement personnel to report any incidents of cancer to the proper authorities. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners calls upon radar equipment manufacturers to eliminate incidental exposure of radar users to dangerous microwaves. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent the United States Senate Government Affairs Subcommittee and the Fraternal Order of Police.
