HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 2014.11.19 - 21583Cbr-rimissioner Dave Woodward MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION #14284 BY: Commissioner Jim Runestad, District #6, Commissioner Dave Woodward, District #19 IN RE: DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES/HEALTH DIVISION - Youth Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Campaign To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS the Oakland County Health Division seeks $15,000 from the prescription discount royalty fund, referenced in the budget as "Rx Discount Card Program" (GL #383486), to implement a Youth Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention campaign. WHEREAS the funds will be used to produce and distribute awareness materials in Oakland County Middle and High Schools as well as purchase appropriate advertising space. WHEREAS misusing and abusing prescription drugs is dangerous and can be highly addictive. WHEREAS the Prescription drug misuse and abuse has grown exponentially in recent years across the United States, State of Michigan and in Oakland County and is considered an epidemic. WHEREAS Michigan's prescription drug overdose death rate ranks 18 th in the country. WHEREAS Estimated 71,000 children 18 or younger were seen in Emergency Departments each year in the US because of medication overdose WHEREAS the Oakland County Health Division, Health Education unit provides substance abuse prevention services in Oakland County to educate and raise awareness about harmful substances including Prescription Drugs. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners shall approve to support from the prescription discount royalty fund a Youth Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention campaign in the amount of $15,000.
