IN RE: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS - OAKLAND COUNTY DESIGNATION OF THE WEEK OF SUNDAY, APRIL 8, 2018 THROUGH SUNDAY, APRIL 15, 2018 AS DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE AND THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2018 AS THE DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF THE VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945 - six million were murdered; Roma (Gypsies) (196,000 to 200,000); people with disabilities (250,000); and Poles (50,000 to 100,000); were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or national reasons; and millions more, including homosexuals (70,000); Jehovah's Witnesses (1,900); Soviet prisoners of war (2.9 million); and political dissidents, also suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny; and WHEREAS the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and WHEREAS the people of Oakland County should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution, and tyranny; and WHEREAS we the people of Oakland County, should actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and WHEREAS Michigan's Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills provides visitors an opportunity to fully appreciate not only horrors and evil of the genocidal act but also the strength, courage and righteousness of survivors; and WHEREAS the Holocaust Memorial Center and other area organizations will be providing numerous opportunities for residents to attend events, learn and renew a shared commitment to the lessons learned from the Holocaust; and WHEREAS the Days of Remembrance have been set aside for the people of Oakland County to remember the victims of the Holocaust as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all peoples; and WHEREAS pursuant to an Act of Congress, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council has designated the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust to be Sunday, April 8, 2018 through Sunday, April 15, 2018, including the Day of Remembrance known as Yom HaShoah, April 12, 2018. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the Oakland County Board of Commissioners designate the week of Sunday, April 8, 2018 through Sunday, April 15, 2018 as Days of Remembrance and Thursday, April 12, 2018 as Yom HaShoah, the Day of Remembrance, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors as well as the rescuers and liberators. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we, as citizens of Oakland County should work to promote human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs.
