IN RE: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS - DESIGNATING SEPTEMBER 11 - 17, 2018 AS MICHIGAN
PATRIOT WEEK IN OAKLAND COUNTY
To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners
Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS the year 2009 marked the inau g ural observation of Michi gan Patriot Week in Oakland County
as a celebration to "Reinvig orate the American Spirit and Constitution"; and
WHEREAS the history and the founding principles of the United States of America should serve as the
cornerstone of civic education. In g reat reverence to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, we acknowled ge that
American citizens must take time to honor the principles and events that led to the creation of our nation,
its founders, documents, and symbols of our history; and
WHEREAS the events that led to the sig ning of The Constitution of the United States of America b y the
delegates of the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787, have si gnificance for every American
and are honored in public schools across the nation on September 17 as Constitution Da y; and
WHEREAS our nation was founded on the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence, which
include:
1. All men are created e qual.
2. They are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable ri ghts.
3. These basic rights are: life, libert y , and the pursuit of happiness.
4. Governments are to be instituted amon g men to secure these ri ghts.
5. Governments derive their just power from the consent of the governed.
6. The people may alter or abolish the g overnment if it destroys these stated principles ; and
WHEREAS during Patriot Week we celebrate and honor the followin g :
September 11: Revolution
September 12: The Rule of Law
September 13: The Social Compact
September 14: Eq uality -Gender
September 15: Eq uality - Race
September 16: Unalienable Ri g hts
September 17: Limited Government
WHEREAS exceptional, visionary , and indispensable Americans such as Thomas Paine, Patrick Henr y,
John Adams, John Marshall, George Washing ton, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Dou g lass, Martin Luther
King , Jr., Elizabeth Cad y Stanton, Susan Anthon y, Thomas Jefferson, Cesar Chavez, and James
Madison founded and advanced the United States ; and
WHEREAS the Bennin gton Flag, work of Betsy Ross, American Flag , Suffra g ist Fla g, Union Flag ,
Gadsden Flag , and the fla g of the State of Michi gan are key physical symbols of American history that
should be studied and remembered by each American citizen.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland Count y Board of Commissioners hereb y
designate September 11 —17, 2018, as Michi gan Patriot Week, in Oakland County - symbolically
beginning this celebration on September 11th and concludin g on Constitution Day.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland Count y Board of Commissioners ur ges the citizens,
g overnment agencies, municipalities, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and schools of the State of
Michigan to recog nize and participate in this extended holiday by honoring and celebratin g the First
Principles, key historical fig ures, founding documents, and symbols of America so that they may offer the
reverence that is due to our free republic.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland Count y Clerk/Register of Deeds is re quested to forward
copies of this adopted resolution to the Michi g an Council for Social Studies, Michi g an Center for Civic
Education, State Board of Education, Oakland Schools, State Bar of Michi gan, Oakland County Bar
Association, Oakland County Circuit Court, and Governor Rick Sn yder.
