RE: (OPPOSE) SB 579 and HB 4650- ELIMINATE RESIDENCY
REQUIREMENTS
TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS:
MR. CHAIRMAN, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
WHEREAS, SB579 and HB 4650 would prohibit governmental
entities from requiring individuals to reside within certain
geographic areas as a condition of employment or promotion for fire
fighters and/or police officers, and
WHEREAS, this legislation would outlaw residency
policies, rules or collective bargaining agreement language which
requires local law enforcement officers and fire fighting personnel
to live within a specific local government jurisdiction, and
WHEREAS, such legislation is an infringement on local
government employment policies, safety standards and ability to
respond to emergency situations, and is an infringement on the
authority of chartered and constitutional governments and their
right to local control.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County
Board of Commissioners does hereby oppose SB579 and HB 4650, and
directs that copies of this resolution be sent to all Oakland
County's State Legislators, its legislative liaison staff, all
cities, villages and townships in Oakland County, and to the
Michigan Association of Counties.
Chairperson, on behalf of the General Government
Committee, I move the adoption of the foregoing resolution.
