MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION # 97013

IN RE: SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT - USE OF COUNTY LAND AND INMATE LABOR FOR
TREE DISTRIBUTION
To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners:
Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS the opportunity exists to provide trees, free of charge, to
communities, schools, and other public entities in Oakland County; and
WHEREAS there is land that is owned by Oakland County and its
agencies that is available for the storage of trees prior to their being
distributed to the requesting entities; and
WHEREAS state statute provides that sentenced inmates over the age
of 18 years who are capable of performing manual labor can perform work
for non-profit charitable organizations and can perform lawful labor for
the benefit of the County; and
WHEREAS the distribution and planting of trees throughout the County
would contribute to the welfare of the citizens of Oakland County; and
WHEREAS the utilization of inmate work details promotes the
development of good work habits which assist in enhancing the
employability of inmates upon their release.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of .
Commissioners does hereby request that land be made available for tree
storage and that inmate labor be utilized for the distribution of these
trees.
Chairperson, on behalf of the Planning and Building Committee, I
move the adoption of the foregoing resolution.
