The Courthouse Security program, under the direction of the Sheriff, was
instituted in late 1992 with ten (10) PTNE Court Deputy positions funded at 1,000
hours each. Since 1992 this program has expanded to include security for the
District Courts in Rochester Hills, Clarkston and Novi. In July of 1996 the
Friend of the Court Division also requested and received Court Security. The 48th
District Court in Bloomfield Township recently requested and received two (2)
Court Deputy positions effective 3/05/98. The current staff for the Court
Security program now includes twenty-one (21) PTNE Court Deputies, three (3)
Deputies I and one (1) Sergeant position.
Recently the Sheriff Department had to send a full time Deputy to the Troy
District Court because of a report from the court that an individual may have
been stalking one of the Judges. The District Court also requested and received
two (2) 500 hour PTNE (emergency salary) Court Deputy positions on a temporary
basis from the Personnel Department. On many occasions, matters handled at the
52nd-4 District Court have resulted in strained and emotional outbursts by
individuals, leaving the staff and members of the public at risk. A permanent
uniformed law enforcement presence would provide the ability to quickly respond
to and control such situations and would minimize the chance of injury to both
the public and the 52nd-4 District Court staff.
Current Court Security staffing levels at the 52nd District Courts are as
follows:
52nd-1 District-Novi
52nd-2 District-Clarkston
52nd-3 District-Rochester Hills
52nd-4 District-Troy
