CITY OF ORCHARD LAKE VILLAGE
ENVIRONMENTAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Orchard Lake Village owns a 50 acre nature sanctuary with
frontage on Upper Straits and Orchard Lakes. Old Orchard Trail, a major
City street, runs through the Sanctuary and divides the Orchard Lake
frontage. There is a severe erosion problem along the lakeshore which needs
to be corrected. The City would like to construct a boulder seawall along
approximately 400' - zoo' of shoreline to correct the erosion problem and
intends to install a drainage system to filter surface water from Old Orchard
Trail before it reaches Orchard Lake. Currently road salt, oil, and other
materials from the road drain untreated into Orchard Lake. The drainage
system would divert the water through a filtering system to eliminate as many
contaminants as possible.
The City would like to begin construction as soon as a MDEQpermit is
obtained and bids can be solicited, which we expect will be sometime later this
Fall or early next Spring. The project is estimated to cost in excess of stoo,000
so the City will be seeking reimbursement each year from the County to cover
as much of the project as possible.
