RE: Board of Commissioners- Support of Senate Bill 315 Holocaust Remembrance
TO: Oakland County Board of Commissioners
Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS, the Michigan State Legislature introduced Senate Bill 315 to establish
Holocaust Remembrance Week in the State of Michigan; and
WHEREAS, a key date in the history of the Holocaust is April 19, 1943, the
beginning of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, when Jews, resisted death camp deportation by
the Nazis for 27 days; and
WHEREAS, this date, which in the Hebrew calendar is the twenty-seventh day of
Nisan, was established in 1980, by the United States Congress as the National Holocaust
Remembrance Day, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, and in honor of the
survivors, as well as, the rescuers and liberators.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Oakland County Board of
Commissioners does hereby support the passage of Senate Bill 315 to establish the
Holocaust Remembrance Week in the State of Michigan; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners
joins in encouraging individuals, educational institutions, and social, community, religious,
labor and business organizations to pause during the observance of Holocaust
Remembrance Week to reflect upon what can happen when bigotry, indifference and
hatred are tolerated in a civilized society; and to rededicate ourselves to the principles of
individual freedom in a just society; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT copies of this adopted resolution be forwarded
to the Governor, the Michigan State Legislature, the Michigan Association of Counties and
to the County's legislative lobbyists.
Chairperson, we move the adoption of the foregoing resolution.
