LAW, CHAIRPERSON RE: MANDATORY CULTURAL DIVERSITY TRAINING FOR MANAGEMENT STAFF To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Personnel Committee, having reviewed MR #01234 on October 17, 2001, recommends the resolution be amended as follows: The last WHEREAS paragraph to read as follows: "WHEREAS the Personnel Depa441444 Committee recommends approval of this resolution." The Personnel Committee recommends MR #01234 be adopted as amended. Chairperson, on behalf of the Personnel Committee, I move the acceptance of the foregoing report. FISCAL REPORT (MISC. 401234) October 25, 2001 BY: FINANCE COMMITTEE, SUE ANN DOUGLAS, CHAIRPERSON IN RE: MANDATORY CULTURAL DIVERSITY TRAINING FOR MANAGEMENT STAFF TO THE OAKLAND COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Finance Committee, having reviewed the above referenced resolution, reports as follows: 1. The resolution authorizes that the Cultural Diversity course provided through Personnel Training & Development be mandated for all managers, chiefs and supervisors within Oakland County. 2. The Cultural Diversity course, which is currently funded through training funds located in the Fringe Benefit Fund, helps participants explore and challenge cultural assumptions that may be keeping them from performing effectively in a diverse setting. 3. A timeframe for completion has not been set; thus the mandate can be accomplished through the regular class schedule. Therefore, there is no financial impact at this time. FINANCE COMMITTEE FINANCE COMMITTEE Motion carried unanimously on a roll call vote with Melton and Douglas absent. -7-e' ( E-ri Coleman Commissioner, District 21 MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION # 01234 BY: COMMISSIONER ERIC COLEMAN, DISTRICT #21 IN RE: MANDATORY CULTURAL DIVERSITY TRAINING FOR MANAGEMENT STAFF To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS in today's workplace, cross-cultural teamwork and collaboration are essential for organizational success; and WHEREAS cultural differences need to be seen as assets in order for the organization to function productively; and WHEREAS management establishes the environment for productivity and organizational success; and WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course provided through Personnel Training & Development stems from the belief that while individuals come from diverse backgrounds and are inherently capable of working together with mutual respect and harmony, the lack of familiarity, bias, and stereotyping can prevent them from interacting successfully with those different from themselves; and WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course helps participants explore and challenge cultural assumptions that may be keeping them from performing effectively in a diverse setting; and WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course provides information, strategies, and skills through activities such as group discussion, video, and role play that will help participants development personal and professional competence to work and live in a multi-cultural society; and WHEREAS the Personnel Department recommends approval of this resolution. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Cultural Diversity course be mandated for all managers, chiefs, and supervisors within Oakland County. Chairperson, I move the adoption of the foregoing resolution. Resolution #01234 September 6, 2001 The Chairperson referred the resolution to the Personnel and Finance Committees.
