HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 2001.09.06 - 26683MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION # 01234 BY: COMMISSIONER ERIC COLEMAN, DISTRICT #21 IN RE: MANDATORY CULTURAL DIVERSITY TRAINING FOR MANAGEMENT STAFF To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS in today's workplace, cross-cultural teamwork and collaboration are essential for organizational success; and WHEREAS cultural differences need to be seen as assets in order for the organization to function productively; and WHEREAS management establishes the environment for productivity and organizational success; and WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course provided through Personnel Training & Development stems from the belief that while individuals come from diverse backgrounds and are inherently capable of working together with mutual respect and harmony, the lack of familiarity, bias, and stereotyping can prevent them from interacting successfully with those different from themselves; and WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course helps participants explore and challenge cultural assumptions that may be keeping them from performing effectively in a diverse setting; and WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course provides information, strategies, and skills through activities such as group discussion, video, and role play that will help participants development personal and professional competence to work and live in a multi-cultural society; and WHEREAS the Personnel Department recommends approval of this resolution. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Cultural Diversity course be mandated for all managers, chiefs, and supervisors within Oakland County.
