BY: COMMISSIONER ERIC COLEMAN, DISTRICT #21
IN RE: MANDATORY CULTURAL DIVERSITY TRAINING FOR MANAGEMENT
STAFF
To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners
Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS in today's workplace, cross-cultural teamwork and collaboration are
essential for organizational success; and
WHEREAS cultural differences need to be seen as assets in order for the
organization to function productively; and
WHEREAS management establishes the environment for productivity and
organizational success; and
WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course provided through Personnel Training &
Development stems from the belief that while individuals come from diverse
backgrounds and are inherently capable of working together with mutual respect and
harmony, the lack of familiarity, bias, and stereotyping can prevent them from
interacting successfully with those different from themselves; and
WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course helps participants explore and
challenge cultural assumptions that may be keeping them from performing effectively in
a diverse setting; and
WHEREAS the Cultural Diversity course provides information, strategies, and
skills through activities such as group discussion, video, and role play that will help
participants development personal and professional competence to work and live in a
multi-cultural society; and
WHEREAS the Personnel Department recommends approval of this resolution.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Cultural Diversity course be
mandated for all managers, chiefs, and supervisors within Oakland County.
Chairperson, I move the adoption of the foregoing resolution.
