HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 2019.03.14 - 31015MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION #19063 BY: Commissioner Shelley Taub, District #12; Thomas Kuhn, District #11; Bob Hoffman, District #2; Marcia Gershenson, District #13; William Miller, District #14; Gary McGillivray, District #20; Kristen Nelson, District #5; IN RE: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS — RECOGNITION OF LIBRARY WEEK IN OAKLAND COUNTY — APRIL 7-13, 2019 To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS libraries of all types are at the heart of Oakland County's cities, villages, towns, schools, and campuses; and WHEREAS libraries are a major participant in the national conversation on intellectual freedom and equity of access; and WHEREAS libraries are helping to narrow the "digital divide" by providing easy and free use of public computers and Internet access to accommodate the increasing necessity of access to digital and online information; and WHEREAS libraries play an essential role in supporting and maintaining the quality of life in our communities; and WHEREAS our libraries promote civic engagement by keeping people appraised of community events and issues; and WHEREAS Oakland County's librarians and library workers partner with other civic organizations to make sure our community's needs are being met; and WHEREAS National Library Week, since its beginning in 1958, is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries nationwide each April; and WHEREAS this year's theme for National Library Week is "Libraries = Strong Communities" and it will take place during the week of April 7- 13; and WHEREAS libraries, librarians, library workers, and supporters across Oakland County will be joining in on this celebration. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners supports the missions of Oakland County's libraries and the theme of this year's National Library Week. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners hereby designates April 7 - April 13, 2019 to be Library Week in Oakland County and encourages all residents to visit their local library to take advantage of the numerous resources they provide and to thank their librarians and library workers for helping to make information easily accessible to all. A sufficient majority having voted in favor, the motion to suspend the rules and vote on Miscellaneous Resolution #19063 — Board of Commissioners — Recognition of Library Week in Oakland County — April 7- 13, 2019 carried.
