HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 2019.04.22 - 31728 MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSIONERS CALL TO ORDER: The Board of County Election Commissioners meeting was called to order by the Honorable Kathleen A. Ryan on April 22, 2019 at 10:04 a .m., in the Elections Division, Board of Canvassers/Training Room, 1st floor, West Wing Extension, 1200 N. Telegraph Rd., Pontiac, MI 48341. ROLL CALL: MEMBERS PRESENT: Ryan, Brown, Meisner. (3) ABSENT: None. (0) OTHERS PRESENT: Joseph J. Rozell, Director of Elections; Heather Kadulski, Election Specialist; Sandy Hughes O’Brien, Deputy County Clerk; Ross Gavin, Deputy Treasurer for Public Policy & Outreach; and Stephen Rideout, Assistant Corporation Counsel. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Moved by BROWN seconded by MEISNER to approve the agenda. Motion carried. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Moved by MEISNER seconded by BROWN to approve the minutes of the March 25, 2019 Board of County Election Commissioners Meeting. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS: Judge Ryan advised that proper notice had been given for today’s meeting for the recall of Rose Mary Hammonds, Board Member, School District of the City of Hazel Park and Kristy Schlak, Board Member, School District of the City of Hazel Park. She also advised that the purpose of today’s meeting according to MCL 168.952 of Michigan Election Law, is that the Commission shall meet and determine whether each reason for the recall stated in the petitions is of factual and of sufficient clarity to enable the officer(s) whose recall is being sought and the electors to identify the course of conduct which is the basis of the recall. A. RECALL OF ROSE MARY HAMMONDS “Trustee Rose Mary Hammonds voted to extend the Superintendent’s contract despite deterioration of the District since the Superintendent’s hiring in 2015, including, but not limited to, the drop in; state standardized test scores. attendance and graduation rates: the 347 staff members who have left the District and the growing number of in district students leaving for other districts. Failure to follow up on and address 2 years of teacher surveys indicating they are working in an unsafe work environment and the two investigations citing hostile work environment.” Judge Ryan asked if there was anyone present who wished to come forward to speak as a proponent of the petition. Deborah LaFramboise spoke as a proponent of the petition. Jeffrey Schroder spoke in opposition to the petition. Discussion followed. Moved by RYAN seconded by BROWN that the petition submitted by Deborah LaFramboise for Rose Mary Hammonds, Board Member, School District of the City of Hazel Park be disapproved. VOTE ON ROSE MARY HAMMOND PETITION: AYES: RYAN, BROWN, MEISNER NAYS: NONE The petition was DISAPPROVED. B. VOTE ON KRISTY SCHLAK PETITION: AYES: RYAN, MEISNER, BROWN NAYS: NONE The petition was DISAPPROVED. PUBLIC COMMENT: None. Moved by RYAN seconded by BROWN that the meeting be adjourned.
