HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 2019.06.05 - 31926 MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSIONERS CALL TO ORDER: The Board of County Election Commissioners meeting was called to order by Clerk Brown on June 5, 2019 at 3:04 p.m., in the Elections Division, Board of Canvassers/Training Room, 1st floor, West Wing Extension, 1200 N. Telegraph Rd., Pontiac, MI 48341. ROLL CALL: MEMBERS PRESENT: Brown, Meisner. (2) ABSENT: Ryan. (1) OTHERS PRESENT: Joseph J. Rozell, Director of Elections; Heather Kadulski, Election Specialist; Jessica Cooper, Prosecutor; Ross Gavin, Deputy Treasurer for Public Policy and Outreach and Stephen Rideout, Assistant Corporation Counsel. Moved by MEISNER supported by BROWN to appoint Jessica Cooper as a Member of the Commission. Motion carried. Prosecutor Cooper assumed the role of Chairperson. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Moved by MEISNER seconded by BROWN to approve the agenda. Motion carried. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Moved by BROWN seconded by MEISNER to approve the minutes of the May 10, 2019 Board of County Election Commissioners Meeting. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS: A. APPROVAL OF BALLOTS FOR THE AUGUST 6, 2019 ELECTION. Discussion followed. Prosecutor Cooper stated that a sample ballot was submitted to the commissioners for approval. The commissioners reviewed the ballot submitted for Rose Township, Precinct 1. Prosecutor Cooper asked for a motion to approve all ballots for the August 6, 2019 Election. Moved by MEISNER seconded by BROWN that the ballots be approved. Motion carried. Page Two June 5, 2019 Board of County Election Commissioners Meeting The ballots were APPROVED. B. RECALL LANGUAGE Prosecutor Cooper advised that proper notice had been given for today’s meeting for the recall of Rose Mary Hammonds, Board Member, School District of the City of Hazel Park and Kristy Schlak, Board Member, School District of the City of Hazel Park. She also advised that the purpose of today’s meeting according to MCL 168.952 of Michigan Election Law, is that the Commission shall meet and determine whether each reason for the recall stated in the petitions is factual and of sufficient clarity to enable the officer(s) whose recall is being sought and the electors to identify the course of conduct which is the basis of the recall. I. RECALL OF ROSE MARY HAMMONDS “On February 11, 2019, Trustee Rose Mary Hammonds voted to extend the contract of Dr. Amy Kruppe, Superintendent of Hazel Park Schools despite deterioration of the school district since her hiring in 2015. The deterioration is evident from the loss of over 347 staff members and the drop in the scores of state mandated tests since 2015.” Prosecutor Cooper asked if there was anyone present who wished to come forward to speak as a proponent of the petition. No one spoke as a proponent of the petition. Prosecutor Cooper asked if there was anyone present who wished to come forward to speak in opposition to the petition. No one spoke in opposition of the petition. Discussion followed. Moved by MEISNER seconded by COOPER that the petition submitted by Deborah LaFramboise for Rose Mary Hammonds, Board Member, School District of the City of Hazel Park be approved. VOTE ON ROSE MARY HAMMOND PETITION: AYES: MEISNER, COOPER NAYS: BROWN The petition was APPROVED. II.
