Woodward, District #19; Nancy Quarles, District #17; Gary McGillivray, District #20; Eileen Kowall, District #6; Helaine Zack, District #18; Gwen Markham, District#9; Marcia Gershenson, District#13; Kristen Nelson, District#5; Shelley Taub, District#12; Thomas Middleton, District #4; and William Miller, District #14; Janet Jackson, District #21 RE: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS — DESIGNATION OF MAY 2020 AS ASIAN AND PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH IN OAKLAND COUNTY To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month is a national celebration during the month of May to recognize the tremendous contributions of Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander descent; and WHEREAS Asian and Pacific Islander Americans have become the fastest growing population group in the United States; and WHEREAS the Asian and Pacific American population grew in the United States by 25.7% between 2010 and 2017; and WHEREAS the total Asian and Pacific American population in the U.S. in 2017 was 23.8 million; and WHEREAS the City of Novi Asian population has grown to 23.22% of the overall total; and WHEREAS Asian and Pacific Americans have enriched our culture, excelling in many fields, including education, business, science, technology, government, sports, and the arts; and WHEREAS countless Asian and Pacific Americans have answered the call to protect the cause of freedom by serving in our Armed Forces; and WHEREAS Oakland County is home to the second largest Asian population in Michigan and nearly half of Asians in the tri -county area; and WHEREAS the City of Troy is home to the largest number of Asians in the region, comprising almost 24.65% of the total population; and WHEREAS the entrepreneurship and innovation of Asian and Pacific Americans have strengthened Oakland County's economy; and WHEREAS Asian and Pacific Americans contribute greatly to the economic, social, cultural and civic life of Oakland County. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners hereby designates May 2020 as Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month in Oakland County and encourages our citizens, governmental agencies, businesses and schools to celebrate and recognize the achievements of Asian Americans. Vote on suspension: AYES: Zack, Gershenson, Gingell, Hoffman, Jackson, Kochenderfer, Kowall, Long, Luebs, Markham, McGillivray, Miller, Nelson, Powell, Quarles, Spisz, Weipert, Woodward. (18) NAYS: Kuhn, Middleton, Taub. (3) A sufficient majority having voted in favor, the motion to suspend the rules and vote on Proposed Resolutions for Introduction items i. — q. (Miscellaneous Resolutions #20129 — #20137) carried. Moved by Miller seconded by Markham the resolutions be adopted. Moved by Taub seconded by Middleton to remove item p. Miscellaneous Resolution #20136 — Board of Commissioners — Proclaiming April 22, 2020 as Earth Day in Oakland County from the suspension list. Discussion followed. Vote on motion to remove item p. Miscellaneous Resolution #20136 from the suspension list: AYES: Gingell, Hoffman, Kochenderfer, Kowall, Kuhn, Long, Middleton, Spisz, Taub, Weipert. (10) NAYS: Gershenson, Jackson, Luebs, Markham, McGillivray, Miller, Nelson, Powell, Quarles, Woodward, Zack. (11) A sufficient majority having not voted in favor, the motion to remove item p. Miscellaneous Resolution #20136 — Board of Commissioners — Proclaiming April 22, 2020 as Earth Day in Oakland County from the suspension list failed. Vote on Proposed Resolutions for Introduction Items i. — q. (Miscellaneous Resolutions #20129- #20137): AYES: Gingell, Hoffman, Jackson, Kochenderfer, Kowall, Kuhn, Long, Luebs, Markham, McGillivray, Miller, Nelson, Powell, Quarles, Spisz, Weipert, Woodward, Zack, Gershenson. (19) NAYS: Middleton, Taub.
