HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 2020.04.29 - 33148MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION #20134 BY: Commissioners Philip Weipert, District#8; Shelley Taub, District#12; Marcia Gershenson, District#13; Nancy Quarles, District #17; Penny Luebs, District #16; Robert Hoffman, District #2; Eileen Kowall, District #6; Christine Long, District#7 IN RE: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS — DESIGNATION OF MAY 1, 2020 AS LAW DAY IN OAKLAND COUNTY To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS Law Day, held annually on May 1, is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law; and WHEREAS Law Day provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share; and WHEREAS in 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day as a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law; and WHEREAS in 1961, Congress designated May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day; and WHEREAS this program continues today and has grown to many countries around the globe; and WHEREAS every year since 1969, the American Bar Association assigns a theme to Law Day; and WHEREAS this year's theme is "Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 191h Amendment at 100'; and WHEREAS the United States is commemorating the centennial of the transformative constitutional amendment that guaranteed the right of citizens to vote would not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex; and WHEREAS the women's suffrage movement forever changed America, expanding representative democracy and inspiring other popular movements for constitutional change and reform. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners designates May 1, 2020 as Law Day in Oakland County and encourages local bar associations, courts, schools, youth groups, and community organizations to provide an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achievejustice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds is requested to forward copies of the adopted resolution to the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. (Miscellaneous Resolutions #20129 — #20137). Vote on suspension: AYES: Zack, Gershenson, Gingell, Hoffman, Jackson, Kochenderfer, Kowall, Long, Luebs, Markham, McGillivray, Miller, Nelson, Powell, Quarles, Spisz, Weipert, Woodward. (18) NAYS: Kuhn, Middleton, Taub. (3) A sufficient majority having voted in favor, the motion to suspend the rules and vote on Proposed Resolutions for Introduction items i. — q. (Miscellaneous Resolutions #20129 — #20137) carried. Moved by Miller seconded by Markham the resolutions be adopted. Moved by Taub seconded by Middleton to remove item p. Miscellaneous Resolution #20136 — Board of Commissioners — Proclaiming April 22, 2020 as Earth Day in Oakland County from the suspension list. Discussion followed. Vote on motion to remove item p. Miscellaneous Resolution #20136 from the suspension list: AYES: Gingell, Hoffman, Kochenderfer, Kowall, Kuhn, Long, Middleton, Spisz, Taub, Weipert. (10) NAYS: Gershenson, Jackson, Luebs, Markham, McGillivray, Miller, Nelson, Powell, Quarles, Woodward, Zack. (11) A sufficient majority having not voted in favor, the motion to remove item p. Miscellaneous Resolution #20136 — Board of Commissioners — Proclaiming April 22, 2020 as Earth Day in Oakland County from the suspension list failed.
