HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 2020.11.19 - 33899REQUESTING SUSPENSION OF THE BOARD RULES FOR IMMEDIATE CONSIDERATION UNDER NEW BUSINESS MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION #20580 BY: Commissioners Nancy Quarles, District #17; David Woodward, District #19; Kristen Nelson, District #5; Marcia Gershenson, District #13; Helaine Zack, District #20; Angela Powell, District #10; Penny Luebs, District #16; Gwen Markham, District #9; Michael Gingell, District #1; Bob Hoffman, District #2; Michael Spisz, District #3; Tom Middleton, District #4; Eileen Kowall, District #6; Christine Long, District #7; Philip Weipert, District #8; Tom Kuhn, District #11; Shelley Taub, District #12; William Miller, District #14; Adam Kochenderfer, District #15; Gary McGillivray, District #20; and Janet Jackson, District #21 IN RE: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS — APPRECIATION OF THE OAKLAND COUNTY ELECTIONS DIVISION FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND ADMIRABLE SERVICE TO OAKLAND COUNTY VOTERS To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS residents of Oakland County depend on the professionalism and integrity of Oakland County Elections Division staff and leadership to ensure safe and secure elections; and WHEREAS under the leadership of Elections Director Joe Rozell, the Elections Division of the Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Office is responsible for the supervision and certification of all elections that take place within the County; and WHEREAS during the 2020 August primary and November general elections, Mr. Rozell and his staff performed their duties admirably in the face of a highly contentious political environment and a global pandemic; and WHEREAS to prepare for expected high -voter turnout, Elections Division staff and leadership implemented an online program to train thousands of poll workers Countywide; and WHEREAS to reduce the potential for spoiled ballots, increase absentee voting and ensure prompt return of absentee ballots to city and township clerks offices, leadership also developed and launched a successful public information campaign to educate Oakland County voters; and WHEREAS election returns show that 74.48 percent of eligible Oakland County voters across Oakland County's 506 precincts had cast a ballot for the November 3, 2020 election, a record turnout due in part to widespread use of absentee voter ballots; and WHEREAS to prepare for this, Oakland County Elections Division leadership created one of Michigan's largest absentee ballot counting boards, which entailed recruiting and training 330 election workers and directly assisting 16 of the County's cities and townships in processing and counting over 144,000 ballots; and WHEREAS this structure has become a nationally recognized model to count all ballots efficiently and accurately; and WHEREAS despite challenges presented by an ongoing public health crisis and a historic embrace of the democratic process by Oakland County voters, Mr. Rozell and the Elections Division staff counted all ballots and reported results promptly; and WHEREAS the Oakland County Elections Division's absentee ballot counting board will also be able to assist the County's cities and townships in processing and counting ballots in the future. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners hereby commends the Oakland County Elections Division on their dedication and service to voters countywide, as well as their success in building on Oakland County's reputation for reliable and timely election operations. Moved by McGillivray seconded by Nelson to add the names of all Commissioners who voted in favor as co-sponsors of the resolution.
