IN RE: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS — DESIGNATION OF MAY 1, 2021 AS LAW DAY IN OAKLAND
COUNTY
To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners
Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen:
WHEREAS Law Day, held annually on May 13t, is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law; and
WHEREAS Law Day provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our
liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share; and
WHEREAS in 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day as a day of national dedication
to the principles of government under law; and
WHEREAS in 1961, Congress designated May 1st as the official date for celebrating Law Day; and
WHEREAS this program continues today and has grown to many countries around the globe; and
WHEREAS every year since 1969, the American Bar Association assigns a theme to Law Day; and
WHEREAS this year's theme is "Advancing the Rule of Law'; and
WHEREAS President Patricia Lee Refo of the American Bar Association stated "the rule of law is the
bedrock of American rights and liberties— in times of calm and unrest alike'; and
WHEREAS the theme reminds all of us that we the people share the responsibility to promote the rule of
law, defend liberty, and pursue justice.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners designates May
1, 2021 as Law Day in Oakland County and encourages local bar associations, courts, schools, youth
groups, and community organizations to provide an opportunity for citizens to understand how law and the
legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans
share.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds is requested to forward
copies of the adopted resolution to the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan.
