HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 2021.05.26 - 34520MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION #21 #21201 May 26, 2021 BY: Commissioners Penny Luebs, District #16, Karen Joliat, District #4; Adam Kochenderfer, District #15; Thomas Kuhn, District#11; Christine Long, District#7; Gary McGillivray, District#20; Chuck Moss, District #12; Philip Weipert, District #8; Charlie Cavell, District #18; Yolanda Charles, District #17, Janet Jackson, District#21; Bob Hoffman, District#2; Kristen Nelson, District#5; Gwen Markham, District#9; William Miller, District #14; Eileen Kowall, District #6; Angela Powell, District #10; David Woodward, District #19, Michael Spisz, District#3; Michael Gingell, District#1; and Marcia Gershenson, District#13 IN RE: BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS - DESIGNATION OF MAY 2021 AS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH AND MAY 7, 2021 AS CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY IN OAKLAND COUNTY To the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen: WHEREAS mental health is critical for our individual well-being and vitality as well as that of our families, communities, and businesses; and WHEREAS one in five (20.5% or 51.5 million) of all Americans experience a mental health illness that requires treatment at some point in their lives; and WHEREAS one in ten (10%) children has a serious mental illness that, if untreated, can lead to school failure, physical illness, substance use, jail and even suicide; and WHEREAS stigma and stereotypes associated with mental illness often keeps those living with such an illness from seeking treatment that could improve their quality of life and help them manage the illness effectively; and WHEREAS the National Institute of Mental Health reports that mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the United States and Canada for ages 15 -44; and WHEREAS mental health recovery not only benefits individuals with mental health disabilities by focusing on their abilities to live, work, learn and fully participate and contribute to our society, but also enriches the texture of our community life; and WHEREAS mental illness is a biologically based brain disorder that cannot be overcome through "will power" and is not related to a defect in a person's "character" or intelligence; and WHEREAS mental health recovery is a journey of healing and transformation, enabling people with a mental illness to live in a community of his or her choice while striving to achieve his or her full potential; and WHEREAS mental health recovery not only benefits individuals with mental health disorders by focusing on their abilities to live, work, learn and fully participate and contribute to our society, but also enriches the culture of our community life; and WHEREAS mental health first aid training teaches participants a five -step action plan to secure care forthe individual; and WHEREAS the Board of Commissioners stands behind programs like mental health first aid training; and WHEREAS May has been designated throughout the nation as Mental Health Month, providing a time for people to come together and display the passion and strength of those working to improve the livesof the tens of millions of Americans affected by mental illness; and WHEREAS Children's Mental Health Awareness Day is May 7, 2021, and has been established to increase awareness and understanding of children and youth living with mental illness and to come together to advocate for a full array of effective services and supports for children affected by mental illness; and WHEREAS the Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN), and its service providers, have demonstrated a record of inspiring hope, empowering people, and strengthening our communities. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners hereby designates May 2021 as Mental Health Month in Oakland County. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners hereby designates May 7, 2021 as Children's Mental Health Awareness Day in Oakland County. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners calls upon our citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, and schools to recommit our state to increasing awareness and understanding of mental illness, and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illness to promote recovery. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Oakland is directed to submit a copy of this resolution to the Oakland Community Health Network.
