Board of Commissioners - Resolution Designating May 1, 2022, as Law Day in Oakland County
Chairperson and Members of the Board:
WHEREAS Law Day, held annually on May 1 st, is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law; and
WHEREAS Law Day provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty,
strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share; and
WHEREAS in 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day as a day of national dedication to
the principles of government under law; and
WHEREAS in 1961, Congress designated May 1st as the official date for celebrating Law Day; and
WHEREAS this program continues today and has grown to many countries around the globe; and
WHEREAS every year since 1969, the American Bar Association assigns a theme to Law Day; and
WHEREAS this year's theme is "Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change'; and
WHEREAS the American Bar President, Reginald M. Turner reminds us that the Constitution is a dynamic
document, as it not only outlines a blueprint for government, but also delegates power, articulates rights, and
offers mechanisms for change; and
WHEREAS legislation, court rulings, amendments, lawyers, and "we the people" have built upon those
original words across generations to attempt to make the "more perfect Union" more real.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners designates May
1, 2022, as Law Day in Oakland County and encourages local bar associations, courts, schools, youth groups,
and community organizations to provide an opportunity for citizens to understand how law and the legal process
protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds is requested to forward
copies of the adopted resolution to the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan.
