AGENDA ITEMS
1. THE REALITIES OF LAW ENFORCEMENT TODAY PRESENTATION
Sheriff Bouchard provided the committee with information regarding law enforcement in today’s
world. A PowerPoint presentation was used to help illustrate the challenges that police officers
face. The media and Internet sometimes portray exaggerated or false information relating to law
enforcement, especially in social media. Police forces have had to incorporate street weapons to
keep from being out-gunned. Armored vehicles are being used in situations to help protect the
officers. Special police training and equipment in specific areas, such as police ambushes and .223
caliber semiautomatic rifles, have become necessary to help officers adapt to our changing world.
2. CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAMS - PRESENTATION
Kalamazoo is one of the first Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) models in Michigan. Mr. Diaz gave a
presentation on the CIT in Kalamazoo . CIT training educates the officers on how to better
understand mental illness and the thought -process of mentally ill persons. The CIT training is a 40-
hour week-long course. The Kalamazoo Police Department currently operates with one CIT trained
officer per shift. Mr. Diaz responded to ques tions regarding jail diversion and how to initiate
training.
