The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) in partnership with Project ChildSafe promote s gun safety. Last year 2,000 gun locks were distributed thro ughout Oakland County. The NSSF currently has provided 3,000 safety gun locks and firearm safety literature to be distributed to law enforcement entities in Oakland County, who in turn will offer them to the community at no charge. Reminders are helpful to promote the safe and secure storage of firearms to prevent unauthorized access or accidents. Accidents involving firearms have decre ased over the last 20 years . A video about talking to children regarding gun safety is posted on their website at www.ProjectChildSafe.org. AGENDA ITEMS 1. ANIMAL CONTROL – 2015 CAGE RENEWAL OAKLAND COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL AND PET ADOPTION CENTER GRANT ACCEPTANCE Animal Control is seeking acceptance of a grant for new cat cages from Two Seven Oh, Inc. The grant is for $30,000. The funds will p rovide 7 cat cages to be used for 14 cats. The stainless steel cat condos are state of the art. The $1,000 plus balance not covered by the grant will be funded through the Legacy Fund . Modern shelters use this type of cage in their facilities. Commissioner Zack brought the grant to the department’s attention. Spisz moved to recommend approval of the attached suggested resolution. Supported by Kowall. Motion carried unanimously on a roll call vote. 2. SHERIFF’S OFFICE – CONTRACT AMENDMENT #3 FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT SERVICES IN THE CHARTER TOWNSHIP OF BRANDON 2013-2015 The Sheriff’s Office is requesting approval of a contract amendment for law enforcement services in Brandon Township. The contract amendme nt proposes that one Patrol Investigator position will continue as School Liaison officer in the Brandon School District until December 31, 2015. The contract duration is usually set for 9 months; however, an arrangement h as been made for the contract to last 12 months. Spisz moved to recommend appro val of the attached suggested resolution. Supported by McGillivray. Motion carried unanimously on a roll call vote. Scott moved to directly refer the resolution to the Finance Committee. Supported by Spisz. Motion carried on a voice vote. OTHER BUSINESS/ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Spisz announced that the Press Conference hosted by the Curbing Gun Violence Study Group will take place at 2:00 p.m. in the Board of Commissioners’ Auditorium to acknowledge Gun Safety Awareness Day on June 5, 2015. Local law enforcement agencies will be participating in the gun safety lock program and subsequently distributing free gun safety locks.
