HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 2020.02.24 - 37338 February 24, 2020 Chairperson Quarles called the meeting of the Legislative Affairs and Government Operations Committee to order at 9:31 a.m. in Committee Room A of the Commissioners’ Auditorium Wing, County Service Center in Pontiac, Michigan. MEMBERS PRESENT: Nancy Quarles, Kristen Nelson, Penny Luebs, Shelley Goodman Taub, David Woodward, Ex-Officio Member MEMBERS ABSENT WITH NOTICE: Marcia Gershenson, Michael Gingell PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Chairperson Quarles led the Committee in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Nelson moved approval of the minutes of January 27, 2020; February 3, 2020; and February 6, 2020, as presented. Seconded by Taub. Motion carried. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA Chairperson Quarles indicated that Item #4, “Presentation – Better with Breakfast Program Update from United Way of Southeast Michigan (UWSEM)” would be moved up as #1. Item #2, “Board of Commissioners – Proposed Changes to the Applications (General and OCHN)” would be postponed to the next LAGO Committee meeting, pending review by Corporation Counsel. There were no objections. Nelson moved approval of the agenda, as amended. Seconded by Taub. Motion carried. PUBLIC COMMENT None. COMMUNICATIONS A. Seconded by Taub. Motion carried. REGULAR AGENDA 4. PRESENTATION – BETTER WITH BREAKFAST PROGRAM UPDATE FROM UNITED WAY OF SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN (UWSEM) Bryan VanDorn, Manager, and Sara Gold, Director of Health and Basic Needs, United Way, gave a PowerPoint presentation providing an update on the progress of the Better with Breakfast program. Mr. VanDorn stated that a program walk-through is planned at Mason Middle School on Thursday, March 5, 2020, at 7:30 a.m. Commissioners are invited to attend. Commissioner Nelson requested that information be provided to the Commissioners about how many students are using the breakfast and that the information be categorized to reflect how many of those students are Title I eligible. Woodward moved to receive and file the PowerPoint presentation document. Seconded by Luebs. Motion carried. 3. PRESENTATION – MICHIGAN STATE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (MSHDA) Edwin Harlin, Director; Van Adams, Departmental Analyst; and Fred Durhal, Community Liaison, Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) gave a presentation regarding Michigan Housing Outreach Initiatives. Nelson moved to receive and file the PowerPoint presentation document. Seconded by Luebs. Motion carried. AGENDA Chairperson Quarles indicated that representatives of MSHDA would be invited to a future meeting, depending on their availability, to complete their presentation, due to time constraints. Item #1, “MR #20043 – Board of Commissioners – Support of Michigan Governor’s Executive Order 2019-19 – Creation of the Poverty Task Force,” would be moved to the next Legislative Affairs and Government Operations Committee meeting. There were no objections.
