HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - 2022.08.17 - 37539 August 17, 2022 MISCELLANEOUS RESOLUTION #22-290 Sponsored By: William Miller III, Charles Cavell, Marcia Gershenson, Michael Gingell, Robert Hoffman, Gwen Markham, Gary McGillivray, Adam Kochenderfer, David Woodward, Philip Weipert, Janet Jackson, Christine Long, Penny Luebs, Chuck Moss, Kristen Nelson, Angela Powell, Yolanda Smith Charles, Michael Spisz, Karen Joliat, Eileen Kowall Board of Commissioners - Resolution Declaring September 9 - 18, 2022, as Welcoming Week in Oakland County Chairperson and Members of the Board: WHEREAS communities bring together immigrants, refugees, and long-time residents in a spirit of unity to build strong connections among citizens countrywide and affirm the benefits of welcoming everyone – including new Americans; and WHEREAS at a time when political rhetoric has deepened divisions, and the COVID-19 pandemic has renewed anti-immigrant sentiment, Welcoming Week reminds us to double down on our inclusive vision and find new ways to bring people together across lines of difference to further develop understanding and mutual support; and WHEREAS for Welcoming Week in 2022, let's declare “Where We Belong” as this year’s theme, and focus on the places and spaces that foster belonging (cities, workplaces, neighborhoods, etc.) and aim to go deeper and spark individual reflection on how and why belonging occurs, and ways we can break barriers so that places can foster belonging for all, including immigrants and refugees; and WHEREAS Oakland County remains resolute in its commitment to continue fostering a neighborly and welcoming atmosphere in our community, where all are welcome, accepted and appreciated; and WHEREAS by participating in Welcoming Week, Oakland County recognizes that being a welcoming community for all makes us stronger economically, socially, and culturally; and WHEREAS Oakland County plans to recognize and celebrate Welcoming Week to help immigrants and U.S. - born neighbors connect and celebrate what unites us as a community; and WHEREAS “Where We Belong” – let's continue to build a country of neighbors. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners hereby declares September 9 - 18, 2022, as Welcoming Week in Oakland County. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners believes communities are stronger when everyone feels welcome and works together for the common good. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners urges elected officials, community leaders and all residents to do their part and join with the initiative to affirm Oakland County as a welcoming county that respects the innate dignity of all people.
