INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
Summary of Proposed Project
Kids First Initiative (KFI) is a transformative 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization working to provide
young people from underserved communities with the vital resources needed to drive social
change in their neighborhoods, innovation in the country and to become changemakers in the
world.
KFI has several areas of focus, each addressing critical needs in the underserved community.
1. A Day Without Hunger – food insecurity
2. STEAM Ignite – providing exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math activities
and careers.
3. Career Pathways – mentoring program and career guidance
4. Kids Corner – providing creative activities for children
KFI would like to expand the ability of their programs to accommodate more students.

What is the purpose of this project?
To provide under-served youth with the vital resources they need to drive change. To expose youth
to new career opportunities with field trips to college and training centers. To expand participation
of youth through STEAM-related camps and address needs for more learning labs, mentoring
programs and experiences.
Who will benefit from the project and how?
Youth in under-served communities who don't have the opportunities to engage in these type of
programs.
What is the expected duration of the project?
Year-round

Chairperson, the Board of Commissioners recommends the following Board action:
MOTION TO approve the one-time appropriation of $100,000 from non-departmental transfers General Fund
Special Projects to Board of Commissioners General Fund Special Projects line-item budget to sponsor the Kids
First Initiative (KFI), a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization providing young people with the vital resources
needed, expansion of existing programming including: A Day Without Hunger – food insecurity, STEAM Ignite
– providing exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math activities and careers, Career
Pathways – mentoring program and career guidance, and Kids Corner – providing creative activities for
children; further, approve the budget amendment as described in the attached Schedule A and that the Oakland
County Board of Commissioners approves and authorizes the Chairperson of Board to execute the required
Interlocal Agreement on behalf of Oakland County upon final review and approval by Corporation Counsel.
Chairperson, the following Commissioners recommend the adoption of the foregoing Board action: Marcia
Gershenson, Angela Powell.
