It is estimated that in 2022, approximately 30% of all new cancer diagnoses in women will be breast cancer; and WHEREAS there are several types of breast cancer—divided into non-invasive and invasive —which can be diagnosed at different stages of development and can grow at different rates; and WHEREAS in 2022, an estimated 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. as well as 51,400 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer; and WHEREAS on average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. and in 2021, it was estimated that 43,600 women will die from breast cancer; and WHEREAS although rare, an estimated 2,710 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the U.S. and approximately 530 will die; and WHEREAS if cancer is detected at an early stage, it can be treated before it spreads to other parts of the body. And, while the exact cause of breast cancer is not fully understood, there are many factors, including age and family medical history, that increase the likelihood of developing it; and WHEREAS 65 percent of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage (there is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the breast), for which the 5-year survival rate is 99%; and WHEREAS in recent years, perhaps coinciding with the decline in prescriptive hormone replacement therapy after menopause, we have seen a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older; and WHEREAS since 1990, death rates from breast cancer have been declining in part due to better screening, early detection, increased awareness, and the continuous improvement in treatment options; and WHEREAS with the advancement in detection and treatment, there are over 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Oakland County Board of Commissioners honors breast cancer patients, survivors, and their families and recognizes October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Oakland County to promote awareness and research for a cure.
