INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
Public Act 261 of 1966 states that the compensation for members of the Board of Commissioners shall be fixed by
resolution approved by the Board of Commissioners. The statute further states that compensation changes for County
Commissioners are effective only after the commencement of a new term of office, following a general election. This
action is being presented separately from the FY2023 Salaries Package because the County Executive makes no
recommendation regarding the compensation of the Board of Commissioners. Pursuant to MR #20662 the Board of
Commissioners adopted compensation with a 0% increase for the 2021 and 2022 term of office. The Board of
Commissioners approved an additional stipend in recognition of the additional duties and responsibilities of certain Board
leadership positions with the adoption of MR #14303, which was increased with the adoption of MR #20662. It is now
appropriate that the Board of Commissioners approve County Commissioner compensation for the 2023/2024 term of
office.
POLICY ANALYSIS
The adoption of compensation for the Oakland County Board of Commissioners is reviewed and
adopted bi-annually by the Commission, prior to the general election and effective upon the start of
the new term. Adoption of this resolution will determine compensation for the term of office January
2023 through December 2024.
PA 261 of 1966, Section 46.415 states that “... changes in compensation shall become effective
only after the time members of the county board of commissioners commence their terms of office
after a general election, provided that it is voted upon before the commencement of the new terms
of office...”
