June 28, 1967
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Frances Clark at 9:00 a.m.
in Committee Room "A", Auditorium Wing, Service Center, Pontiac.
COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT:
Frances Clark, Chairman; Robert Allen, Velma Austin, John Carey,
Clarence Durbin, Daniel Murphy, Dorothy Olson and Frazer Staman.
COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT:
Daniel Barry, and Donald Kalmbach.
OTHERS PRESENT:
Kenneth L. Van Natta, Director.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Mr. Van Natta informed the Commission that the study of Oakland County
recreational needs by the University of Michigan School of Natural
Resources is progressing well.
The Director gave the following report relative to Groveland Park:
1.
Parks & Recreation Commission assumed full operation
on
June 16, 1967.
A.
In the nine succeeding days, the park grossed
$4,800.00, for an average of more that $530.00
daily.
B.
Estimated season gross, $40,000.00 - $50,000.00.
2.
A contract
for the part-time services of the present Park
Manager,
Arnold Johnson, has been negotiated for $7,000.00
per
year.
3.
Concession
contract - Mrs. Barrett, concessionaire.
A.
Park Commission to:
a. Handle purchasing
b. Pay bills
C. Furnish $200.00 bi-weekly advance.
B.
Mrs. Barrett to be responsible for hiring of and
paying for concession personnel as part of her
contract responsibility.
C.
Terms: Mrs. Barrett to receive 60% of the net
profit of concession. The Commission to receive
40% of the net profit.
4.
Park
Maintenance Employee Contract - Mr. Ashley Sr. &
Mr.
Ashley Jr.:
A.
Occupy house of property rent free until 3/1/68.
B.
Each to receive $300.00 permonth for a period of
four months.
5.
Park
Maintenance Summer Help
A.
Fourteen year old gate cashiers have been replaced
by 18 year old personnel.
B.
Groundskeepers minimum age now set at 18.
C.
Three life guards employed, two on duty when necessary.
D.
Uniforms. It was suggested that employees wear a
uniform shirt. Agreed that at least an insignia
was desirable.
E.
Lands and Grounds crew presently at work bringing
park up to standard and erecting signs.

6. Water Wheel. There was discussion concerning the safety
factors involved. It was deemed advisable to retain the
water wheel if adequate safeguards could be provided.
7. Charges for entry and use of the park to be unchanged for
the balance of the season and are as follows:
A. $1.50 admission per car. Additional .25G per person
for a carload over six people.
B. $1.50 per night for camping privileges. Additional
.50r,l for use of electricity.
8. Suggestion from Park Manager for making sleigh rides
available to groups during the winter months.
Mr. Van Natta gave the following report on Davisburg Park:
*1. Season gross as of June 26, 1967 - $10,600.00.
2. Recommended replacement of present club house will
soon be advisable.
3. Recommended entering into negotiations with the County
Road Commission for the adjoining Mill Pond property
which it owns and presently occupies.
Moved by Mr. Murphy, supported by Mr. Carey
The Park Commission shall obtain an appraisal
of the Mill Pond property adjacent to Davisburg
Park and owned by the Oakland County Road
Commission. Motion Carried.
* Projected gross for entire season had been $20,000.00
There was discussion in regard to the 347 acre Van Arsdel property
located in Oxford Township, and the pending expiration of the once
renewed option. It was agreed that if a purchase were to be effected,
a report should be given to the full County Board of Supervisors,
inasmuch as one of the owners became a Supervisor subsequent to the
taking of the original option.
The Director gave a brief resume of properties located in Addison &
Independence Townships.
Mr. Van Natta was requested to make arrangements for the Commissioners
to review both the Van Arsdel property in Oxford Township & the
Lakeville property in Addison Township.
