February 26, 1969
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Mrs. Clark, at 9:45 a.m.
in the Parks and Recreation Commission Room.
COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT:
Chairman Frances Clark, Vice Chairman John Carey, Secretary Velma
Austin, Henry Schiffer, Sol Lomerson, Daniel Barry, Clarence Durbin
and James Reid.
COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT:
Thomas Dillon.
ALSO PRESENT:
Kenneth L. Van Natta, Director; and Gerard Lacey, Assistant Director.
The minutes of the January 29, 1969 meeting were discussed.
Moved by Mr. Barry, supported by Mr. Schiffer, that
the minutes be approved as written.
Mr. Durbin abstained because of absence at the
January 29, 1969 meeting.
Motion carried.
Mr. Van Natta presented the 1969 recommended admission rates for
Groveland-Oaks and Springfield -Oaks. The rates to be lower for
County residents than non -county and senior citizens at 50% of
regular rate. Reduced rates for senior citizens not to apply on
week -ends and proof of residence must be shown.
Moved by Mr. Barry, supported by Mr. Lomerson, that
the rates as recommended be accepted.
Motion carried.
Mr. Lacey gave progress report on the Soap Box Derby events. The
Soap Box Derby Exposition to be held at the Pontiac Mall July 7-
12 and the Derby to be held at Waterford -Oaks on July 19.
Report made to the Commission by Mr. Van Natta that the Parks and
Recreation Commission has been asked to participate in the Pontiac
Press Flower Show, to be held in March at the Pontiac Mall. The
approximate cost for a display and flowers to be $2,200. Discussion
followed concerning the purchase of a contour map of Addison -Oaks
which could be used as a display and as a land use study and
development tool.
Moved by Mr. Durbin, supported by Mr. Barry, that
the Parks and Recreation Commission purchase
a contour map of Addison -Oaks and that the Commission

participate in the Pontiac Press Flower Show.
Motion carried.
Mr. Van Natta reviewed a letter concerning the Recreation Bond
issue, to be sent to other Parks and Recreation Departments and
City Commissions. It stated that the Oakland County Parks and
Recreation, as a review agency for recreation projects
applications submitted to Southeast Michigan Council of
Governments, will be pleased to offer assistance in the form of
advice and counsel in preparing applications for Bond money aid.
The Commission agreed Chairman Clark send the letter.
Discussion followed concerning the Davisburg Rotary plans for
property in Davisburg.
Moved by Mr. Lomerson, supported by Mrs. Austin,
that the Davisburg Rotary be allowed to develop
and maintain this property under the direction of
the Parks and Recreation Commission. Rotary Club
to furnish labor for construction and maintenance,
Commission to furnish material.
Motion carried.
Discussion followed concerning the monthly meeting date.
Moved by Mr. Carey, supported by Mr. Barry that
the meeting date be changed to the fourth
Tuesday in each month and that special meetings
will be called at such time when needed.
Motion carried.
Mr. Van Natta reviewed the conditions at Addison -Oaks and the
advisability of endeavoring to open this recreation area as soon
as possible.
Moved by Mr. Barry, supported by Mr. Reid, that
the Director employ the necessary staff, proceed
immediately to renovate and repair the existing
facilities for use as soon as possible and that a
development plan and cost estimate be given to the
Commission for future development.
Motion carried.
Discussion followed concerning the development of this site.
Wilcox and Laird to do the development plan.
Discussion followed concerning the immediate use of the trap
and skeet shooting field. Mr. Carey stated this should be done
immediately as part of the Park use. The Commission members
concurred.

Mr. Van Natta outlined the plans for a National trailer jamboree
that may be held at this site in 1970. The Commission concurred
that this should be explored further and to report the
possibilities back to the Commission.
Mr. Van Natta reviewed the possibility of the Commission
sponsoring a Spring Fair, perhaps in conjunction with 4-H for
children in all of Oakland County. The Fair to be held in White
Lake Township. The Commission concurred that this should be
done as a public relation effort.
Moved by Mr. Carey, supported by Mr. Schiffer
that the meeting be adjourned.
Motion carried.
