HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 1970.08.07 - 38392PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING August 7, 1970 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Frances Clark at 9:45 a.m. in the Parks and Recreation Commission room. COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Frances Clark, Vice Chairman Clarence Durbin, Secretary Velma Austin, Sol Lomerson, Thomas Dillon, Daniel Barry, James Reid, Carl O'Brien, Henry Schiffer. ALSO PRESENT: Mr. Kenneth L. Van Natta, Raymond Delask.o, Michigan State recreation student. The minutes of July 17, 1970 were discussed. Moved by Mr. Durbin, supported by Mr. Lomerson that the minutes of July 17, 1970 be approved as written. Motion carried. Discussion and review of election results followed. Mr. Van Natta reported that plans should be started for the construction of resident managers' homes for Springfield -Oaks and Independence -Oaks, which will be needed for 1971. As previously discussed, the exterior of the buildings should fol- low the rustic line. Moved by Mr. Schiffer, supported by Mr. Durbin that the director be authorized to submit plans, for resident managers' homes, to the Commission for approval. Motion carried. Revamped Springfield -Oaks Clubhouse plans will also be sub- mitted to the Commission. Mr. Van Natta explained that he would like to proceed with development request to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) for matching funds. Moved by Mr. Durbin, supported by Mr. Richardson that the director be authorized to apply for development funds to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Motion carried. Page 2 (8/7/70 Commission meeting) A letter of intent for operating 4-H Activity Center by the Parks Commission was read. This letter was submitted to the Board of Commissioners Finance Committee. Mr. Van Natta re- ported that the 4-H Building was approved to go the the county's Building and Grounds Committee for $819,000. The possibility of a catering service for Addison -Oaks and other park sites was discussed. This is due to the undesirable operation and condition now prevailing at Addison -Oaks. Mr. Van Natta to report his findings to the Commission at a later date. Discussion followed concerning the personnel hiring policy of minority groups. Consensus was that present policy included all groups. The difficulty was to get qualified applicants. The chairman called a special meeting for August 28, 1970. Moved by Mr. O'Brien, supported by Mr. Durbin that the meeting be adjourned. Meeting adjourned at 11:45 a.m. Velma Austin, Secretary Pauline McCormick, Acting Secretary
