HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 1971.01.15 - 38427PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING January 15, 1971 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Frances Clark at 9:45 a.m. in the Parks and Recreation Commission room. COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Frances Clark, Vice Chairman Clarence Durbin, Secretary Velma Austin, Henry Schiffer, Daniel Barry, Carl O'Brien, Paul McGovern, Thomas Dillon, Frank Richardson. COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT: James Reid ALSO PRESENT: Mr. Kenneth L. Van Natta, Director; Mrs. Marjorie Walker, Birmingham Parks and Recreation; Mr. Edwin Wichert, Director of Parks and Recreation for Bloomfield Hills Schools; Professor Jeffrey Greenhouse, Environmental Studies Program, Oakland University. Also other committee members. Chairman Mrs. Clark welcomed Mr. McGovern to the Parks Com- mission. Moved by Mr. Dillon, supported by Mr. Schiffer that the minutes of December 18, 1970 and January 5, 1971 be approved as written. Motion carried. Mrs. Walker, Mr. Wichert, Professor Greenhouse and other mem- bers of the committee adressed the Commission concerning a natural area in southeast Oakland County. Their proposal was that Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission purchase 164 acres of natural area north of I-75 access road and west of Adams Road. They recommended that the area could be a nature preserve and arboretum to be operated by the County Parks as an environmental learning facility similar to Genesee County's facility "For -Mar." A letter from Mr. Homer Case, Bloomfield Township supervisor, was presented stating that Bloomfield Township would volun- teer to assume policing of such a natural area park. A report of all information presented will be sent to the Commission for their study and recommendation. Page 2 (January 15, 1971 meeting) Mr. O'Brien, who arrived after the minutes were approved, questioned the minutes of January 5, 1971 stating he thought a motion was made to authorize a feasibility study of the food service program for Addison -Oaks. Mrs. Austin explained why the motion did not appear in the minutes. The motion in question was made by Mr. O'Brien, supported by Mr. Barry that a food service feasibility study be made for Addison -Oaks. The motion was tabled without being voted on. Mr. Slotkin advised the Commission there really wasn't anything to study inasmuch as the site had been established and the Commission was committed to serve food in the Parks system. He stated the problem was the policy the Commission wanted to follow. The Commission asked that additional data be submitted to them before they voted. An estimated 1971 Financial Projection and the recommended development projects were presented. Discussion followed. Moved by Mr. Schiffer, supported by Mr. Durbin that the 1971 recommended development projects be approved. Motion carried. Mr. Durbin suggested that material for the Commission's study and approval be sent to them in advance of the meeting date. Moved by Mr. Dillon, supported by Mr. Barry that the meeting adjourn.
