January 29, 1971
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Frances Clark at
9:30 a.m. in the Parks and Recreation Commission room.
COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT:
Chairman Frances Clark, Secretary Velma Austin, Paul McGovern,
Daniel Barry, Frank Richardson, Thomas Dillon, William Mainland,
Henry Schiffer, Carl O'Brien.
COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT:
Vice Chairman Clarence Durbin
ALSO PRESENT:
Mr. Kenneth L. Van Natta, Director
Chairman Mrs. Clark welcomed Mr. Mainland to the Parks Com-
mission.
Moved by Mr. Dillon, supported by Mr. McGovern
that the minutes of January 15, 1971 be approved
as written.
Motion carried.
The request for Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission
to purchase land in Bloomfield Township as a nature study area
and arboretum was discussed. It was the director's recommenda-
tion that we do not have the type or amount of financing neces-
sary for this type of recreational area in our Parks system.
Also, the suggestion was that the group be advised that while
we could not help them in the manner they requested we would
endeavor to help in any other way possible.
Moved by Mr. McGovern, supported by Mr. Richardson
that the Commission concur in the recommendation
of the director and the Bloomfield Township Committee
be advised of this action.

The proposal made by Huron -Clinton Metropolitan Authority
and presented to the County Board of Commissioners was dis-
cussed. The proposal was referred to the Parks Commission
for consideration and recommendation.
It was decided that any recommendation be deferred to another
meeting and that at this time Mr. Clarkson, of the Huron -
Clinton Metropolitan Authority, be invited to the meeting to
explain the proposal. Also, the Board of Commissioners are
to be advised of this action.
Election of officers for the ensuing year.
Moved by Mr. Dillon that Mrs. Clark be nominated
for Chairman, and unanimous vote be cast, sup-
ported by Mr. Barry.
Motion carried.
Moved by Mr. Barry that Mrs. Austin be nominated
for Vice Chairman and unanimous vote be cast,
supported by Mr. McGovern.
Motion carried.
Moved by Mr. Dillon that Mr. Schiffer be nominated
for Secretary and unanimous vote be cast, sup-
ported by Mrs. Austin.
Motion carried.
Officers for 1971 are:
Mrs. Frances P. Clark, Chairman
Mrs. Velma Austin, Vice Chairman
Mr. Henry A. Schiffer, Secretary
Mr. Van Natta reported that we are still waiting for Mr. Cohn
to sign the option for the Crooked Lake property.
Mr. Schiffer suggested that the Commission indicate our posi-
tion as to the use of pollutants in the Parks system. Mr.
Van Natta was asked to forward a letter to the County Liaison
Committee declaring that the Oakland County Parks and Recreation
Commission supports any steps taken by the County Commissioners
in regards to the pollution problem.
Mr. Van Natta reported that a request is expected to be
received from the Northwest Parks and Recreation Association
to meet with the Commission regarding a field house in South
Oakland County. Also the Royal Oak Township Park Commission
is expected to request a meeting regarding help on their
application for State Funds. A meeting with State people next

week to work out possible details is planned. A report on
this progress will be given at next meeting.
Moved by Mr. Dillon, supported by Mr. Richardson
that the meeting be adjourned.
