Lewis, Jr. in the classroom of the Lewis E. Wint Nature Center at Independence Oaks. COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Pecky D. Lewis, Jr., Vice Chairman Richard Skarritt, Secretary Richard D. PUBLIC COMMENTS: There were no questions asked by, nor comments received from, the public. APPROVAL OF PAYMENTS: Moved by Mr. G. Kuhn, supported by Mr. VanderVeen to approve the payment of the Inter- departmental Payment Register for the months of May and June, 1999 (FM 08 and 09); the Journal Voucher Register for April, May, and June, 1999; the Oak Management, Inc. Credit Register for April, May, and June, 1999; and the Payment Register, including the Voucher Report Period for June, 1999 (FM 09), and the CIP Voucher Report Period for June, 1999 (FM 09). 3-1 (Commission Meeting, August 4, 1999) AYES: G. STATEMENT OF OPERATIONS: The Statement of Operations for the month ending June 30, 1999 (FM 09, FY 1999) was accepted as filed. ACTIVITIES REPORT: The Activities Report for the month of June, 1999, was accepted as filed. LYON OAKS UPDATE: Project Manager Christy Summers, of Beckett & Raeder, Inc., updated the Commission on the status of the golf course development project, including variance and site plan approval received from Lyon Township, plus preliminary work with the Road Commission for Oakland County for access and lanes into the park. Mr. Gary Cooper, architect of the clubhouse, reviewed changes in the central area of the building, which will provide for better progression for the banquet facility, plus changes in the interior lobby, which will allow it to also function as a small meeting room. He also noted changes in the storage area, which will make the cart storage area smaller, but still allow room for the 120 carts. Consultant is currently working on the construction documents for the site plans; expecting the plans to go out to bid in early winter, with construction to begin next spring. Commission will be provided samples of the stone/brick/roof shingle material that will be included in the bids specifications. EXECUTIVE OFFICER'S REPORT: In addition to the Executive Officer's Report filed in the agenda, the following was noted: ---Administrator - Parks Operations Dan Stencil and Assistant Administrator Jon Kipke attended a recent Rose Township Board meeting to revisit the issue of hunting in Rose Oaks. The township board intimated that any additional activities proposed for the park must be presented to them through our park master planning process. ---The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board has approved the conservation easement for Lyon Oaks; the next step will be receiving approval from the Department of Natural Resources. ---Tony Filippis, Sr., of Wright & Filippis, has made a verbal commitment of a donation totaling $20,000 for the construction of an accessible gazebo at Independence Oaks near the Twin Chimneys shelter. NEW BUSINESS: Commissioner G. Kuhn distributed newspaper articles on innovative programs for senior citizens plus programs designed to assist the underprivileged and disabled in the schools. He also presented an article on the sport of kayaking and its increasing popularity. He requested staff review and evaluate these programs 3-2 (Commission Meeting, August 4, 1999) The next meeting will be at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 1999. The meeting was adjourned at 10:09 a.m. to a tour of Independence Oaks and Upper Bushman Lake, then attended the rededication of the Lewis E. Wint Nature Center and its new exhibits. Richard D.
