Carey Vice -Chairman July 5, 1968 Mrs. Velma Austin Secretary 40 To the Members of the Daniel W. Barry Clarence A. Durbin PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION Donald A. Kalmbach Oakland County, Michigan Daniel T. Murphy James L. Reid Henry A. Schiffer Frazer W. Staman Commissioners Ladies & Gentlemen: I thought you would be pleased to know the progress Kenneth L. Van Natta Director that is being made in your department. Gerard C. Lacey The Soap Box Derby is progressing real fine. We have Assistant Director 70 entrants and have had a tremendous amount of radio and newspaper publicity. This is really helping our- selves to be known. Saturday, July 20, 1968 at 12:30 p.m. is Derby Day at the Oakland County Service Center. There will also be an Oil Can Derby with many dignitaries invited and they will be the participants. We hope each and every one of you are able to attend. The Buildings and Grounds Committee has recommended approval of our lease for the Evangelical Mission and the Scott Lake Road property. Ways and Means and the Board of Supervisors are yet to act. An "open space" grant for the Scott Lake Road purchase was approved in the amount of $92,000. This really is County money even though we made the application, but it is sure to enhance our lease chances. The Evangelical Mission application is being reviewed. This is also a County project and the grant application is for $75,000. We have also received an "open space" grant to assist in the purchase of Groveland. This grant was for $197,500. This is our Park monies. Page. 2. It is also a pleasure to inform you the Land and Water Fund application for Crooked Lake has cleared all levels at the State and is now in Washington. This application is for $271,000 and approval looks favorable. Park operating income is slightly higher than last year. We feel this is real progress, especially when weather conditions have "dampened" outing enthusiasm. Actually, yesterday July 4th we had to close Groveland. All camp sites were filled, all picnic, swimming and parking areas were filled and our sanitary system was "over flowing". The additional land we have under option at this area will prove to be needed and a real boom to the future of this area. Chairman Clark will call a Park meeting as soon as additional information on our lease negotiations is available. Don't forget! Soap Box Derby - 12:30 p.m. - July 20, 1968 at the County Service Center. Most cordially, Kenneth L. Van Natta KLV:sn
