Van Natta KLV:slw 338-6196 THE PONTIA,C PRE a West Huron street Pontiac, Michigan WS SATURDAY, MAY 30, 1970 Support Worthy of voters' and taxpayers' support. is a project of the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Com- mission. The Commission will put to the electorate at the August primary elec- tion a proposal to extend the five- year one -quarter mill tax levy that was approved four years ago. The purpose of the tax was to acquire land for five County parks comprising 1,600 acres (when land values were relatively moderate) and to defray costs of their development. By the end of 1970, (which covers three years of tax collec- tion) the Commission will have collected $2.6 million. This amount; when matched 50-50 by Federal grants for land acquisi- tion, will cover the total cost .of the first "five-year plan." The renewal of the quarter -mill tax Area's Play grounds levy (approximately $2.50 a year for a home with a market value :of $20,000) will enable the Commission to initiate and complete another pro]*- ect of comparable scope. With the County's population esti- mated at.nearly 950,000 and.growing at the rate of 25,000-30,000 a year, few would question the need for ad- ditional recreational facilities for residents. Sigmuficantly, Oakland County is proportionately well ahead of. other areas in its development" of , public, playgrounds, and is being eyed by' the Federal government as a model in this realm of public welfare. L The Press commends the Oak- land County Parks and ltecrea tion Commission on its impres- sive record of progress and urges voters to authorize continuance of it.
