Adjournment ITEM #5 OAKLAND COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS QUARTERLY REPORT PREPARED BY JANET PUNG This is the twentieth in a series of quarterly reports prepared for the Parks and Recreation Commission outlining the activities of the Public Communications Divison during the months of July - September, 1984. Public Service Announcements WLBS radio reports that it aired 13 Oakland County Parks public service announcements during July and August Tribune United in Clarkston has joined cable operations in Water- ford, Birmingham, Southfield, Madison Heights and Farmington Hills which air Oakland County Parks psa's A psa on the wave pool aired on WWJ radio V. Radio Interviews/Coverage Eric Reickel's appointment to Wayne County was announced on WWJ radio August 4 Beginning September 11, Jan Pung is doing a weekly three -minute parks events tape with WPON radio. The information is aired on Tuesdays at 8:25 p.m. Lew Wint and Eric Reickel were interviewed by Eliot Trumbull for WPON radio July 9 at Pike Street restaurant in Pontiac WWWW interviewed Eric Reickel about the parks millage renewal on August 6. 5-(3) V. Radio Interviews/Coverage, Continued Mr. Reickel was also interviewed about the millage renewal August 6 on WMJC radio Howard Monson, coordinator of the Groveland Oaks Travel Trailer Show, and dealer Ed Baker were interviewed on a half-hour WPON show Kathleen Dougherty was interviewed by station's WMJC July 27, CBE in Windsor July 23 and CKLW's Marc Avery July 25 about her "Healthful Herbs" nature program Lynn Conover was interviewed by CBE about her nature program, "Creating with Nature's Scents" VI. Television Interviews and Coverage Channel 56's "Video Detroit" aired a feature on the BMX program July 26 and 27 The SCAMP program at Independence Oaks aired on the Channel 2 6 p.m. news July 24 "PM- Magazine" taped a feature at Addison Oaks July 27 about a group of people who met while camping Millage renewal was mentioned on the Channel 7 news August 6 as "an opportunity to support the park system" Millage renewal issue and excerpts from parks cable programs were featured on Tribune -United cable August 1 Eric Reickel was interviewed on Tribune-United's "Oakland Weekly News" August 8 Continental Cablevision taped the Nature Discovery mobile recreation unit in Madison Heights August 7 The Puppetmobile was taped in Flint for Channel 5's (Flint, Sagi- naw, Bay City) "PM Magazine" to be aired August 22 VII. Anthonv M. Franco Assistance Arranged for Eric Reickel to meet with the editor of the Daily Tribune to brief him on the millage renewal, The Tribune subse- quently gave its editorial endorsement. Contacted Hugh McDiarmid, political wirter for the Detroit Free Press, to suggest an interview with Eric Reickel about the Michi- gan Land Trust.Fund (Proposal B ) that is on the November 6 ballot.. Sent query letters for possible interview with Mr. Reickel on the Michigan.Land Trust Fund to Barbara Kusak at radio station WMJC, .producer of "Focus Show" on WJR, John Delle Monache at WWJ, and Dick Haefner at WXYZ. Included information about Kathleen Dougherty's "Healthful Herbs" and "Creating with Nature's Scents" nature interpretive programs in AMF's "Informed Sources" that is sent to the media. Kathleen was interviewed on "Healthful Herbs" by CBE radio in Windsor for "Radio Noon" program. Her assistant, Lynn Conover, was interviewed on "Creating with Natures. Scents" for the same program. Kathleen was also interviewed by Marc Avery on CKLW, Roberta Jasina on WMJC, and by Cindy Kmett of the Troy -Somerset Gazette. 5-(6) XIII. Anthony M. Franco Assistance, Continued Made recommendations on the media to be invited on a tour of the parks. AMF, Inc. writer met with Janet Pung and Eric Reickel to develop an article on the water theme aspect of Waterford Oaks. The article is completed and AMF, Inc. will attempt to place it in a recreation publication. AMF, Inc. writer met with.Jon Kipke and Dan Stencil to develop an article on the evolution of the BMX program at Waterford Oaks. It is a."how to" type of article that should be helpful to other recreation directors looking to establish a BMX program in their systems. Included information .about.the Camper -Rama Travel Trailer Show at Groveland Oaks in the AMF's "Informed Sources." As public relations counsel.to Oakland County Parks, AMF, Inc. continues to provide media contacts, arrange for interviews with print and electronic media, write by-lined articles for state and national recreation publications, recommend new public relations activities, serve as sounding board for new ideas, assist in problem solving and offer advice on new publications. 5-(7) ITEM #6 UPDATE ON CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS Joe Figa will present an update on the capital development projects that are currently in progress; the Nature Center, the facade at Waterford Oaks, and the Red Oaks Wave Pool design. ITEM #7 THE 1985 RECOMMENDED REVENUE & OPERATING BUDGET Staff will be presenting the 1985 Budget for your final review. We will be looking for acceptance of the budget, so we can prepare the general appropriation act and set the date for the public hearing prior to formal approval. rA ITEM #8 INTERIM MANAGER'S REPORT ---Attached is a flyer pertaining to a workshop for Board and Commission members sponsored by the Michigan Recreation and Park Association. It will be held at the Glen Oaks Golf Course on October 17, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Lew Wint will give the introduction at the seminar.
